Monmouthshire and the surrounding areas are full of amazing things to see and do. From some of Europe's best Roman remains in Caerleon, through Norman Castles everywhere, up to spectacular remains of the Industrial Revolution at Blaenavon, and ending with remants of its past steeped in coal at Big Pit. The area has gradually recovered from its industrial scars, leaving a countryside of astounding natural beauty. Visit the world-famous Wye Valley, stopping at Tintern Abbey and Chepstow Castle. Try the Clydach Gorge leading to the heartland of the area's industrial past at Blaenavon, now a Book Town. Follow the Cordell trail as you reconstruct scenes from his famous trilogy - 'Rape of the Fair Country', 'Hosts of Rebecca' and 'Song of the Earth'. Best of all, base yourself in Usk, a pretty town full of history and flowers. Visitors pour in during the summer months to see the magnificient flower displays which always make Usk winners of 'Wales in Bloom'. Wander round the magical Castle which gives you magnificent views over the surrounding country. Meet the geese and chickens who live there and imagine for yourselves the sights and sounds of the medieval battles and feasts which took place in and around the Castle. You can even stay a night in the North Tower and imagine you're a medieval castellan. Or visit the Church. Wander by the river and enjoy a picnic on one of the various 'islands'. Usk is full of places to stay, and restaurants, cafes and pubs to eat and drink in. Try the Three Salmons, an historic coaching inn, or the Glen-yr-Afon House Hotel, a renovated C19th house. Several of the pubs offer rooms in Usk itself. If you fancy making a grand weekend of it, why not stay at the world-famous 5* Celtic Manor Resort 12 miles south of Usk? Here you will be looked after in the lap of luxury and can enjoy all the facilities of the home of the Ryder Cup in 2010. Maybe you'd prefer the Cwrt Bleddyn Hotel and Lesiure Club, just 3 miles away? A gracious country house on the outside, its interior has recently been refurbished in ultra-modern style. |
